Mouthguards are strong dental appliances that can help you and your smile, especially while you are active. Because there are so many options available and not everyone seems to use mouthguards, you might have some questions about the appliance. So, to help you, our dentist, Dr. Steven Walker, is happy to give you answers to commonly asked questions about mouthguards in Chesterton, Indiana.

What is a mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a protective dental appliance that fits tightly over your arch of teeth. There are a few different mouthguards available in the world today, including stock, boil-and-bite, and custom-made mouthguards. It’s recommended to wear one when you participate in high-contact sports and activities.

What can a mouthguard do for me?

A mouthguard can protect your smile from a blow to the face. Blows to the face are quite common in high-contact sports and activities. The ball, elbows, knees, helmets, and other hard objects can hit your mouth with extreme force. If you’re not wearing a mouthguard, there is a high chance you could suffer an oral injury, like chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth.

Where can I find a mouthguard?

You can oftentimes find a mouthguard at your local sporting goods store or you can find the custom-made mouthguard at your dental office.
